(Real-Time Updates) 5:56pm 6/13: Update on Chief's Statement Release 1 hr 20 min ago 2 sections below.
The rank and file officers in CMPD have been pleading for years for the ability to wear outer carrier vests. These vests are much cooler than their current under shirt vest and allow for the officers to wear their equipment in a more erognomic manner. The belts they are forced to wear cause back pain and discomfort for them. The Chief of Police will not allow them to wear these because he does not like the militarized look of the vest.
With Officer morale being so low in CMPD right now, honoring this request of our CMPD rank and file patrol officers should be a no brainer.
Since the Chief of Police wouldn't do what is right during this budget process and accept the $500,000 my colleagues on the City Council voted UNANIMOUSLY to provide them in the 1st of 2 Budget Straw Votes,
I'm now asking the citizens and corporate partners of Charlotte to show their support and Shield the Blue in CMPD.
Here's what I need you to do:
1) Sign and share the petition below demanding our current Chief of Police allow the rank and file patrol officers to wear outer carrier vests. If we get a lot of signatures and he still refuses, I will then send out another petition demanding his resignation (but we will get to that step later and hopefully it's not necessary).
2) Donate whatever you can by clicking the GoFundMe link below. We know we need $500,000 because during the Budget Straw Vote process I did extensive research and that amount will enable us to bring top of the line outer carriers for the 1000+ patrol officers who are without them risking their lives to protect us every day. You can be confident in your donation for 2 reasons: IF we can get to $500,000, and IF the chief decides to accept it, GoFundMe allows me as the owner of this fundraiser to enter a name and email address of the Budget Director of CMPD, who will recieve an automated link that will enable them to completely take control of the funds, at which point I will no longer be able to control them, and when they route the money into the City of Charlotte bank account, every donor will recieve automated updates from the GoFundMe platform. IF we raise the money, but IF the chief decides to keep his heels dug in and refuse the officers request, I will continue fundraising while I launch the 2nd petition. If the 2nd petition doesn't work (meaning I fail at this mission and the chief wins), I will immediately click a button on the GoFundMe platform that returns all donations back to all of you. I don't plan on losing, though.
So that's the plan folks - full transparency and a specific plan with a singular mission - please get involved if this topic speaks to your heart... and then we will see what happens.
With Love, Tariq
P.S. I will be making this page look better and have more information for you to have all the info and tools you need in one place to help out. Put it together this afternoon. You can come directly here to my site, or just tell people the call to action is go to the website ShieldTheBlue.org so its easy to remember and they will be routed here.
The CMPD Chief of Police just released a statement, as I predicted earlier today to several news outlets, and as I predicted, it is filled with inaccuracies.
Let me give you the punchlines now, in the form of Q&A’s below that I ask you read alongside his statement and decide for yourself.
Not if it isn’t included along with additional evidence.
False. Currently our Patrol Officer have Level 2 ballistic plates in the under-shirt vests. We can equip these outer carrier vests with newer and light weight Level 3a plates.
An appropriate outer carrier with the necessary ballistic panels would cover more surface area on an officers body and offer additional protection over their current ballistic vests.
They do not. I’ve listened to the chief and his command staff in depth, talked with global experts that equip SEALS and Special Forces, and personally tested a state of the art, 2 months out of R&D, R-Series vest that CRYE Precision overnighted me - and the concerns that were raised did not happen. See more diligence on the website I will be loading in the next few days to see for yourself.
No. I have consistently said I did not believe any of the protective gear I’ve proposed would have changed the outcome of that tragic day - rather that it should be a time for us to learn, listen to what our officers want, and become better. I could site specific details of the reports that have come out from April 29th, but I feel it would be inappropriate and disgusting for me to use any example from that day as a “justification” for my stance.
-No. I encourage every citizen, business owner, and reporter to ask the next 10 rank and file officers if they want them. You will be doing a small sampling of the 100’s I’ve asked that question to over the last 2.5 years. All I request is if you do that, do it quietly, and do not take their names and respect their anonymity - the last thing we want to do right now is get anyone in trouble or create chaos in our beloved department.
Yes, in a post George Floyd world, making sure we are proactive in breaking down the barriers (including what officers wear) between our officers and our neighbors.
That boils down to your personal opinion, which brings us to the crux of the problem we are facing. One man, the Chief of Police, has decided that.
Not in years. Too uncomfortable. Ask him.
